On October 4, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman launched the "Apki Poonji, Apka Adhikar" campaign to reunite Rs 1.84 lakh crore in unclaimed financial assets with their rightful owners.

Finance Minister Sitharaman has accorded high importance to tracing and returning unclaimed funds - currently held by banks, Reserve Banks of India (RBI) and Investor Education and Protection Fund (IEPF) - to rightful owners. The campaign has a simple but powerful message that every rupee saved by citizens must return to them or their families.

Presently, this large corpus is held in the Depositors' Education and Awareness Fund (DEAF), accruing a simple interest of 3 percent per annum, causing depositors to forgo substantial potential returns.
