KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- An 82-year-old metro man defied the odds this weekend, becoming the oldest person to trek to the South Base Camp of Mount Everest in Nepal.
Eight days ago, David McClung of Olathe, Kansas, and his son Dennis McClung, 55, set off on a journey to complete the 17,598-foot climb to the South Base Camp of the world's tallest mountain.
And on Sunday, the McClung men reached the camp, making David the oldest person in the world to complete the rigorous hike.
South Base Camp serves as the starting point for those who want to summit the mountain, and is considered one of the most demanding hiking routes in the world.
The climb spans approximately 80 miles, demanding 6-8 hours of walking each day through steep and rocky terrains and harsh weather conditions.
