Victim-survivors of family and domestic violence might not be accessing the paid leave they are entitled to as both employers and employees poorly understand the laws enabling it.

Since 2023, employees in Australia have been entitled to 10 days of paid family and domestic violence leave.

The aim is to allow victims of family violence to take time off work without losing income or their job while, for example, they navigate the court system, attend counselling or move house.

One in four women has experienced violence from an intimate partner since the age of 15, according to 2021/22 Australian Bureau of Statistics data, with the social and economic cost estimated to be $26 billion annually.
