Perth shelters say they’re experiencing a massive increase in the number of dogs being surrendered as the State Government remains quiet on the next steps to stamp out backyard breeding.

It comes after new data from the Companion Animal Network Australia found fewer animals had entered shelters and foster care in 2024-25, while adoption numbers were on the decline.

But for some animal shelters in Perth, the situation looks very different.

Dogs’ Refuge Home in Shenton Park, one of Perth’s biggest dog-based shelters, says the number of dogs that have come through their shelter this year is more than they’ve ever had before.
