Florida parted ways with coach Billy Napier on Sunday, seven games into his fourth season.

Napier went out with a win, beating Mississippi State 23-21 in the Swamp on Saturday evening, but it ultimately wasn't enough to save his job. Napier leaves with a 3-4 record in 2025 and a 22-23 record overall, the worst for any Gators coach since Raymond Wolf (1946-49).

Now, Florida will have a new face leading it in its final five games as it tries to reach bowl eligibility with a brutal remaining schedule. According to CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz, wide receivers coach Billy Gonzales is set to be named interim head coach following Napier's firing.

Gonzales, who is 54, is a longtime Florida assistant currently in his third stint with the program. He served as a receivers coach and coordinator under Urban Meyer from 2005-09, and he later reunited with former Florida offensive coordinator Dan Mullen at Mississippi State.

He followed Mullen to Gainesville from Starkville, serving as receivers coach once again from 2018 until Mullen's firing in 2021. After one year coaching at Florida Atlantic, Napier brought Gonzales back ahead of the 2023 season.

Co-offensive coordinator Russ Callaway is the likely candidate to take over play-calling after Napier's firing. Callaway previously served as the offensive coordinator at Samford from 2018 to 2019.

For Gonzales, it will be his first time serving as a head coach in any capacity during his career.
