Atlanta United has fired head coach Ronny Deila, the MLS club announced on Sunday.

The decision comes one day after the Five Stripes concluded their 2025 campaign with a 1-1 home draw against D.C. United, which clinched the Wooden Spoon for the league's worst record with the result.

In his only season in charge of Atlanta United, Deila compiled a record of 5W-13D-16L, accumulating an abysmal 28 points in 34 matches. Atlanta finished just two points ahead of D.C. United.

"It was evident that our standard of play was not met this season, and together with our senior leadership team, we have decided that it was in Atlanta United's best interest to move the team in a different direction," said CEO and president Garth Lagerwey.

"Ultimately, we owe our fans a much better on-field product and it is our unwavering commitment to provide that to this community as soon as possible. We want to thank Ronny for his time and commitment to the organization and wish him well in his future endeavors."

Expectations were high when the Norwegian coach arrived at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, having won an MLS Cup with New York City FC during the 2021 MLS season.

With the addition of striker Emmanuel Latte Lath for a then-record $22 million transfer fee plus add-ons, along with the return of club legend Miguel Almirón, Atlanta was expected to contend for a title this year.

However, things never seemed to gel with this squad despite the big (and expensive) acquisitions, ultimately causing the dismissal of Deila.

After immediate success under former head coach Tata Martino, the club will be looking for their fifth coach since the Argentinian's departure.
