WORCESTER, Mass. —

Worcester Police Department cruisers will be equipped with new lights as part of a six-month test to determine whether the equipment increases visibility and deters crime.

According to the department's announcement, the steady blue lights will be installed on all marked patrol vehicles. The test began Sunday morning.

"Our hope is that this program will help reduce the risk of collisions and deter unsafe driving habits," Chief Paul Saucier said in a statement. "The blue lights show drivers that our officers are out there and are a reminder to operate lawfully."

The department notes that drivers do not need to pull over when they see a police vehicle with the steady blue lights. Drivers should only pull over for flashing lights and sirens.
