The New York Yankees announced Sunday that former catcher Jesús Montero has died at the age of 35 following a motorcycle accident he was involved in earlier this month.

Montero began his major league career with the Yankees after the organization signed him in 2006. The Venezuelan player generated significant excitement, earning recognition from Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus as a top 10 talent in all of Major League Baseball during 2010, 2011 and 2012.

In September 2011, during his fourth game after being called up by the Yankees, Montero hit two home runs in a victory over the Baltimore Orioles.
