An event at the Tamaya Resort on Saturday celebrated women in rodeo sports, but it also had a more urgent purpose — raising money for a nonprofit that rehabilitates unwanted "rescue" horses.
It's a labor of love. said Kayla Heston, who works with the Tamaya Horse Rehab organization.
"I like horses because when I think about them, I like history first of all," Heston said. "I think about the history of this country and how it was built on the backs of horses, and it's a way of life you don't really see a whole lot anymore. So we're keeping it alive out here and in our little horse rescue."
Those who came saw many activities of most rodeos — breakaway roping, team roping, barrel racing, chicken races — but with a difference. All the equine participants are rescue horse
