The seeding of both Cincinnati and Columbus in MLS's Eastern Conference led to the matchup, with Cincinnati placing second in the standings and Columbus placing seventh.

The battle to move into the quarterfinals is likely to be hard-fought, with Columbus getting the better of Cincinnati in the regular season in a 4-2 win at TQL Stadium in July.

The two teams had also met in their first matchup in May in Columbus, where the two teams stalemated in a 1-1 draw.
