North Frontenac Township residents evacuate homes as wildfire spreads

Some North Frontenac Township residents were evacuating their homes on Sunday evening due to a spreading wildfire.

In a social media post just before 7 p.m., the OPP said Highway 509 north of Mississippi Station to south of Ompah was closed due to an active fire. Minutes later, it said the fire was pushing north and east due to windy conditions.

In an update at 7:44 p.m., police said an emergency evacuation centre had been set up at the Ompah Community Hall at 10200 Highway 509 in Ompah.

The township stated in a social media post that the wildfire was between South Lavant Road and Snow Road. It said the Township Emergency Control Group had convened, and that updates would be provided throughout the emergency.
