A world record for sheep shearing has been set in southern New South Wales by a team of five shearers.

Their tally of 2,301 merino lambs is the first official record in the five-stand, eight-hour category.

The team included Kiwi shearers Cameron Hicks and Benjamin Duncan, along with Australians Lochie Robertson, Toby Walker and Nick Lehmann.

Together, it took them, on average, less than a minute to shear each sheep during the eight-hour day of shearing at Morven, about an hour south of Wagga Wagga.

Riverina shearing contractor Mr Robertson said keeping up the pace put a lot of strain on his body.

"Pretty sore standing here, my back is on fire, and I reckon I've torn my hamstring or something,"

he said.
