The government has given a key response to campaigners asking for the country to be given a say on the rush to introduce ID cards in the UK. The Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced in September that a digital ID system would be introduced in 2029 and would be mandatory for people working in the UK as part of a bid to tackle illegal migration.

But it has sparked a big backlash with support in the summer for the scheme seemingly falling away - and support has been gathering for a UK referendum on the issue. In June, 53% of voters surveyed said they were in favour of digital ID cards for all Britons, while 19% were opposed.
