A year after carrying out its groundbreaking ceremony, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) proposal for building residential quarters for Solid Waste Management (SWM) workers remains in limbo over rules pertaining to its Development Plan.
In October 2024, the BMC had proposed setting up residential quarters for conservancy workers of the SWM Department under the Ashray Yojana scheme. A portion of the plot on which the quarters will be built is owned by the Mumbai Port Trust (MBPT) which has leased it to the civic authority for building the quarters. Of the total 1,892.15 sq m area of the plot, around 1,403 sq m is owned by the civic authorities, while 489.13 sq m is owned by the MBPT.
