Amazon Web Services (AWS) experienced a significant outage early Monday morning, affecting numerous popular websites and applications globally. The disruption began shortly after midnight, leading to increased error rates and latency for many services. Among the affected platforms were Snapchat, Roblox, Ring, and Fortnite, with users reporting issues accessing these sites. The outage also impacted major companies like Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, although there is currently no indication that air travel will be significantly affected. According to DownDetector, a site that tracks online outages, users reported problems with various services, including Reddit, Facebook, and Coinbase, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the U.S. Many users were unable to report issues due to the outage affecting the automated support system of Coinbase. AWS identified the root cause of the problem as an error related to DynamoDB, a database management system. The company stated, "We can confirm significant error rates for requests made to the DynamoDB endpoint in the US-EAST-1 Region." By 4:27 a.m. CT, AWS reported signs of recovery, stating that they were working towards full restoration of services. However, as of 6:08 a.m., some disruptions were still being reported. In the United Kingdom, customers of banks such as Lloyds and Bank of Scotland faced difficulties logging into their accounts. The U.K. government’s tax and customs service also encountered issues due to the outage. AWS explained that the problems stemmed from DNS resolution issues affecting the DynamoDB API endpoint. DNS, or Domain Name System, translates domain names into IP addresses, allowing users to connect to websites. As of now, AWS has stated that the underlying DNS issue has been mitigated, and most services are functioning normally. However, some users may still experience connectivity issues as the company works through a backlog of requests. AWS has committed to providing updates as they continue to resolve the situation. The company emphasized that they are actively working to restore full service across all affected platforms.
