The Government has issued a response to calls from the public for a referendum on introducing mandatory identity cards in the UK.

The statement comes just days after thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of central London , voicing their opposition to the proposed digital ID plans.

In September, the Prime Minister announced that a mandatory 'BritCard' would be rolled out in 2029 as part of an effort to curb illegal immigration.

Sir Keir Starmer's declaration sparked a big backlash, with support for the scheme seemingly falling away in recent weeks.

Instead, support has been gathering for a UK referendum on the issue.
