SAN FRANCISCO -- A man who died in Oakland Police custody Saturday morning was a former NFL player, a new report says.

Doug Martin, the former All-Pro running back for the Oakland Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, died at age 36, his family said in a statement Sunday.

ABC7 News Bay Area's media partners at the Bay Area News Group report Martin was arrested following a break-in at a home on Ettrick Street near the Oakland Zoo. Martin was taken into custody a little before 5 a.m.

Police say he had a medical emergency, and there was a brief struggle before he became unresponsive.

"Paramedic personnel arrived, provided medical aid, and transported the individual to an area hospital for further treatment. Unfortunately, the individual later died at the hospital," Oakland Police Departmen
