To the Editor:

Voters in Onondaga County will vote on a proposal that will impose term limits on county legislators and lengthen the term of office from two to four years. It does not come close to fixing what is wrong with county government and could make things worse.

The proposal term-limits the legislature. But having legislators with a lot of experience in county government is a good thing. Veteran legislators of both parties have tapped into their experience to evaluate new proposals. Legislators can change or block proposals from the county executive they object to. New legislators are more likely to go along.
