OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - On this day in history in 1982, the Brandeis department store building downtown joined the ranks of the National Register of Historic Places .
The store was the largest retail establishment in Omaha when it opened in 1906.
Jonas Brandeis came to Omaha in 1881 and opened a small store at 13th and Howard. After its success came another store at 16th and Douglas.
Construction on the J.L. Brandeis and Sons building started in 1905. The downtown store served Omahans for almost 75 years.
It was the first “total service store” in Omaha, with a post office, restaurant and free phone service in addition to selling merchandise.
Today, the building houses apartments and retail space.
