The Tempe City Council voted to recommend a denial for a new liquor license at King’s Liquors, a former Circle K at the corner of University and Ash in downtown Tempe based on past problems at the location.
The council was persuaded after residents of the Maple Ash community said the previous business had a heavy police presence and caused frequent disturbances to the neighborhood.
The council voted 6-1 against recommending the liquor license, with Councilmember Randy Keating dissenting, as he claimed a new business should be given a fair chance to prove that it will not hold the same reputation as the previous business.
“I do think they should be given a chance to show that it wasn’t that alcohol was being served there, it was the business,” Keating said before the vote.
