IONIA COUNTY, Mich. (WILX) - Officials in Ionia County are out with a new scam warning about someone who has been impersonating police, trying to get people to pay them.

The Ionia County Sheriff’s Office says they have received several calls from concerned citizens letting them know they’ve been getting calls from “Sergeant Peters.”

“The person is often telling people that they failed to appear for court and had been served a subpoena and signed for it. Eventually the scammer requests some form of payment over the phone,” a release from the sheriff’s office said.

“Law enforcement DOES NOT take any form of payment over the phone, EVER,” the release said.

If you do have a warrant for your arrest, the sheriff’s office says they may mail you a letter or call you, but they “will never ask
