WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WFSB) - A coyote chased people near West Haven High School on Saturday, prompting police to issue a warning to residents, though no one was injured in the incident.

West Haven Animal Control said there have been sightings across the city, with several reported near the high school due to the area’s marsh land.

Police provided a picture of the coyote involved in Saturday’s incident. Officers are working with animal control and the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection on the matter.

Police said coyotes are common across Connecticut and generally are not a threat to people, but they are wild animals with the potential to become aggressive.

For residents near the shoreline with marsh land and wooded areas, hearing and seeing coyotes is a common occurrence.
