Telesat, an Ottawa-based satellite communications company, recently announced they have purchased a plot of land in Timmins to develop a landing station which will connect data from its advanced low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite network, Telesat Lightspeed, to points of presence and fibre in northern Ontario.

The site will be located on Laforest Road, near its intersection with Highway 655. Crews are currently preparing the site, with construction of antennas and other networking equipment expected to begin in the spring of 2026.

The company said that Telesat Lightspeed, which is the largest space program in Canadian history, will help bridge the country’s digital divide by extending the reach of telecommunications networks in rural and remote communities.
