SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Skidmore College is celebrating a massive surprise donation from a woman who graduated back in 1947. The transformative $3.3 million donation will go toward scholarships for future Skidmore students.
In the final days of World War II, many women had their hearts set on starting families. But Sibyl Kirby was starting college.
"She was a pioneer in so many ways right, not only pursuing education at a time when women didn't always do so, but she was an incredible tennis player apparently," said Jessica Ricker.
Ricker is the vice president of enrollment and dean of admissions and financial aid at Skidmore College. She said Kirby graduated from Skidmore in 1947. Kirby ran the Student Athletic Association and also majored in Sociology.
