OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - A bridge construction project on Omaha’s busiest street is still a few years away, but planning is already in the works.
Among the problems are cost and convenience of travelers, but there’s another important issue too.
Nils Erickson is passionate about the historical significance of the Lincoln Highway.
It’s America’s first cross-country highway.
It’s also State Highway 6.
Most Omahans know it as Dodge Street.
“This is the Lincoln Highway (and) Saddle Creek bridge and it’s nearly one hundred years old,” Erickson said. “The curbstones are from the 1880s as the facade, so we recycled...I call it Omaha’s first and only successful recycling project and the city of Omaha and the state of Nebraska want to tear it down.”
The bridge is also a national historic landmark
