OTTAWA — Representatives of carmaker Stellantis and Unifor, the largest union representing auto sector workers, met with federal and provincial ministers Monday to discuss the bombshell announcement that the big carmaker is laying off 3,000 workers and shipping production of one of its vehicles from Brampton to Illinois.

Industry Minister Melanie Joly “summoned” Jeff Hines, the president of Stellantis Canada, to meet in Ottawa, according to a government official who spoke on condition they not be identified, to discuss next steps for the company.

The meeting was attended by Unifor president Lana Payne — hours before Payne was scheduled to appear at a parliamentary committee, and Ontario Economic Development Minister Vic Fedeli participated virtually, the source said.
