Waterloo Regional Police are warning residents about a sophisticated scam involving fake bank representatives and police officers.
Police said on Saturday, a Waterloo resident was contacted by scammers claiming to be from Scotiabank and the Toronto Police Service.
The callers, using spoofed phone numbers and official-looking emails, pressured the resident to surrender bank cards via a “courier” under threat of legal consequences, police said.
The resident contacted their financial institution and police before any financial loss occurred.
Police said to verify the caller by hanging up and calling the official number on the back of the bank card, never rely on caller ID, never share personal information through links or texts and look closely at email addresses as official agencies don’
