— At Shepherd’s Cross, a working sheep farm in Claremore, fiber arts are more than just a hobby—they’re part of a mission to preserve tradition and teach others the value of hand-crafted work.

Preserving a Centuries-Old Craft

Feeding strands of fabric through a loom is an art that dates back to the 16th century. In early America, nearly every home had a loom and a spinning wheel to make fabric. At Shepherd’s Cross, that same heritage is being revived through a series of weaving and spinning classes.

This fall, the farm is offering courses in tapestry weaving, mug rug weaving, and rag rug weaving—though the rag rug class is already full. More sessions are planned for early 2026.

“Then we have tapestry weaving on a rigid heddle loom—that’s a table loom,” said owner Dr. Diane Dickinson. “
