BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- Central Alabama Water has raised the liability insurance for the Lake Purdy Dam.

The CAW Board of Directors said Monday the decision to raise the coverage is because of a recommendation from the board's lawyers. The 100-year-old dam is in the middle of a $28 million renovation, which is expected to finish next year.

Last week, it was reported the dam had just $1 million of liability insurance, which caused concern in the community.

According to CAW, the dam is considered a high hazard by the Federal Emergency Management Agency because of its location near residential homes, not because of its condition.

Attorneys for CAW presented a new policy for the dam to the board, which raised the coverage from $1 million to $10 million. The policy was accepted.
