Trust in public health institutions has been declining for years. Popular YouTuber “Doctor Mike” has some ideas for how to fix that.

Mikhail “Doctor Mike” Varshavski is a family physician who started a YouTube channel in 2017 because he felt there was “a lack of evidence-based voices online.”

“It created this gap that was filled by grifters, by snake oil people, people who were selling all sorts of miracle cures. And we weren’t there to combat that,” he said.

His channel has become extremely successful — he now has 14.4 million subscribers on YouTube and millions more across other social media platforms.
