CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cuyahoga County’s plans to sell millions of dollars in unpaid property tax liens are on hold – for now.
County Council’s Community Development and Housing Committee declined to pass the legislation out of committee on Monday, essentially killing the proposal. That means it will not go before the full council for a vote next week.
The contract would have allowed the county to sell up to $40 million in delinquent property tax liens to NAR Solutions, a private company that would work with property owners to settle their debts. County leaders have said the move would help recoup revenue for schools and local services, but opponents worry the sale could expose residents to aggressive collection tactics.
The committee’s decision wasn’t just a principled stance, however.
