SPENCER, Iowa —
Congress is recognizing this week as National Character Counts Week, with the global headquarters of the Character Counts! organization based in Iowa.
During a floor speech, U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, spoke about flood recovery efforts in Spencer, a city in northwest Iowa that suffered significant damage after the Little Sioux River overflowed its banks last year.
Grassley said the community embodies Iowa values.
"They didn't stop to consider creed, race, gender or political affiliation. They were only concerned about those who had the needs caused by the devastating floods. So they simply rolled up their sleeves. They simply pulled together. Neighbors helping neighbor. And, of course, that's the Iowa way," Grassley said.
