HARPERS FERRY — On Sept. 19, at Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home, a brief, private service returned the remains of Susan Capino to her family. The pastor offered a short Christian reflection on salvation and the harm that violence leaves behind, keeping the focus on Capino’s memory and the family’s need for closure. Attendance was intentionally small, limited to her mother, Joyce Lonas, and her sisters, Audrey Hess and Samantha Austin. The family said they kept it private because they had already held a public funeral in 2001, when they were told to expect the return of her remains. There was no public announcement.
