OLYPHANT, Pa. — Law enforcement officials in Olyphant are asking parents who own firearms to lock them away.

This comes after the Lackawanna County District Attorney's Office charged 26-year-old Kristopher Sheerer of Olyphant. He was brought out of the police station Tuesday afternoon and taken to the Lackawanna County Jail.

Police say Sheerer's 3-year-old daughter got ahold of a gun and shot herself in the leg.

The incident happened just before 8 a.m. inside a home along the 600 Block of East Lackawanna Avenue in Olyphant.

According to court paperwork, the child's father, Kristopher Sheerer, told investigators he went upstairs to have a cigarette and heard a gunshot. When he got to his daughter, Sheerer said he saw blood. Sheerer told investigators that he keeps his weapons in a backp
