Minutes after The Louvre opened, thieves carried out a daylight heist, stealing “priceless” jewelry on Sunday morning.
Using a truck-mounted ladder to enter the Apollo Gallery through a window, the thieves stole nine items from the Napoleonic era. Eight of the nine items remain unaccounted for, according to the French culture ministry.
The one recovered item, the crown of Empress Eugénie, the wife of Napoleon III, was dropped and damaged during the heist, prosecutors said. The crown has eight gold eagles, 1,354 diamonds, 1,136 rose-cut diamonds and 56 emeralds.
The Louvre remained closed Monday to allow police to continue their investigation.
