WASHINGTON — On the 21st day of a government shutdown, with neither side budging from their positions, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said the clock is running out for lawmakers to pass the appropriations bills that fund federal programs.
The funding legislation that has stalled in the Senate for weeks was only intended as a stopgap measure to keep the government open through Nov. 21, but a 12th failed Senate vote on the measure Monday put that timeline in jeopardy.
“That date was chosen by Republicans and Democrat appropriators to allow for seven additional weeks so they could finish the job,” Johnson said Tuesday at a news conference at the Capitol. “The great irony is the Democrats who say they want everything to be done, they are the ones that are eating up the clock.”
