The Town of Fort Erie is joining a handful of other Niagara municipalities in a call to urge upper levels of government to make registries of sex offenders public information.
A motion approved by the City of Thorold was on Fort Erie’s regular council agenda Monday night, one that urges the province to open the list for Ontarians to see.
Following a motion brought forward by Ward 1 Coun. George McDermott, Thorold’s resolution was supported, with Fort Erie also adding that the federal government be urged to do the same with the national registry.
McDermott’s motion was approved unanimously.
The national registry was created in 2004 to provide police with access to current and reliable information on registered sex offenders in order to help police prevent or investigate sexual offences.
