Food insecurity remains a pressing issue in Welland as organizers prepare for the city’s largest collection of pantry needs.

“This year, The Hope Centre expects over 27,000 food bank visits,” Shirley Perron, co-ordinator of the Welland Food Drive , told city council last week.

“The demand for emergency food support in our community is higher than ever, with 35 per cent of those served (being) youth under 18.”

Held since 1992, the long-running event supports The Hope Centre , Open Arms Mission and the Salvation Army by collecting non-perishable food donations left at doorsteps across the city.
