A minor population increase for a severely endangered whale species has been released, though experts say the news “cannot be taken as a sign of a change of tide.”
The North Atlantic Right Whale Consortium released a population estimate for the rare North Atlantic right whale species, noting a 2.1% increase in population from 2023 to 2024.
The total number is approximately 384 whales — including 11 calves — compared to an estimated 376 whales in 2023.
