The search for missing bushwalker Daryl Fong in Tasmania's Mount Field National Park has ended in tragedy as police confirm a body has been found.

Tasmania Police said in a statement that search and rescue teams had located and recovered the body believed to be Fong about 6pm on Tuesday.

Mr Fong had been missing for nine days, since October 12, after setting off on a solo hike to take photos of the Tarn Shelf Circuit.

Despite extremely challenging weather conditions, including waist-deep snow, poor visibility, and gale-force winds, search efforts continued over the past week.

Inspector Luke Horne thanked all the search crews, who were assisted by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, for having "worked tirelessly" in such extreme conditions.
