TOLEDO, Ohio — The community came together to eat and support Schmucker’s Restaurant on Tuesday morning in west Toledo.

The fan-favorite diner has been closed for two months to repair damage from a fire in August.

The event was put on by the Reynolds Corners Rotary Club, and members say it was a success, with more than 100 people stopping by for lunch.

“The community has really supported us, and it has really filled my heart with joy to feel that support from the community since day one,” said owner Doug Schmucker.

Schmucker’s has been a Toledo staple since the 1940s, but a turned-off “open” sign, locked doors and a two-month temporary closure mark a first, and a stressful time, for the restaurant’s 30 employees.

But when a kitchen burns, the entire village brings their plates.
