JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - The 16-year-old grandson of civil rights activist James Meredith has been charged with the murder of a former Germantown High School student.

On Tuesday, James Knight, Meredith’s grandson, and another juvenile were charged with the crime involving 17-year-old Saleh Humaid , who was killed in Jackson on September 17.

Humaid was a former Germantown High School student, having withdrawn early in 2025.

In court, it was revealed that Knight had been texting Humaid about purchasing THC vapes. More than ten vapes were later found in Knight’s bedroom.

Knight’s mother told the court that given her family’s strong ties to the community, Knight would not be a flight risk.

Knight was given no bond.
