BOSTON —

As the New England Council marks 100 years of service to the community, the group's leader is reflecting on the beloved brother who inspired him to give back.

"He's been a blessing my whole life," said James Brett of his brother Jack. "My brother Jack had an IQ of about 60, 63. But he became my teacher. He taught me what it's like to live with disabilities."

James Brett was a state lawmaker for 15 years, ran for Mayor of Boston, and is now the President and CEO of the New England Council. His life's devotion to his brother has also earned him recognition — he was appointed by three presidents to serve on the Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities.

He's proud of those positions. But he's never alone.
