WILLISTON, ND (KXNET) — The City of Williston is encouraging residents to conserve water over the next few days as the Williston Water Treatment Plant reduces operations due to a high level of turbidity in the Missouri River.
Due to an elevated level of cloudiness in the river, caused by river silt, the treatment plant has had to slow operations to ensure that all water produced meets safety compliance standards.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, river silt contributing to turbidity, when found in excess, can absorb pollutants and mask the presence of harmful microorganisms, like bacteria.
Residents are not in danger of running out of water, city spokespeople emphasize, but people are encouraged to conserve water as river conditions normalize and production is increased.
