BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — Lead poisoning is preventable, and this week, North Dakota health officials want families to know how to protect their families before it’s too late.

During National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, Oct. 19–25, North Dakota Health and Human Services (HHS) and local public health partners are raising awareness about the risks of lead exposure and ways to prevent it.

Lead is a toxic metal found in the environment and in older homes. Even small amounts can harm young children and pregnant women. Kids younger than six are most at risk, especially infants and toddlers who often put their hands or toys in their mouths. Lead exposure can slow growth, cause learning and behavioral problems, and lower IQ.
