BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — In an effort to reduce crash fatalities involving drivers and passengers not wearing seat belts, the state is continuing its "Click It or Ticket" initiative, with the next enforcement period beginning November 1.
In 2023, 47% of crash fatalities in the state involved people who were unbuckled, the Mandan Police Department reports.
North Dakota's seat belt law allows law enforcement to pull drivers over if they notice they are not wearing one, even if no other traffic violation is committed. The law also requires that all occupants of a vehicle remain buckled while it is moving.
The campaign will run until December 12.
The recent "Put the Phone Away or Pay" initiative, targeting distracted driving, resulted in 665 citations in September.
