ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - State officials have approved the application of a proposed $1 billion hospital in Acworth.

On Tuesday, Wellstar Health System said the 675,000-square-foot facility was greenlit by the Georgia Department of Community Health. In June, the health system filed a certificate of need, a document formally requesting permission to build the hospital.

The 230-bed facility would support Cobb, Paulding, Cherokee and Bartow counties. According to Wellstar, the region is expected to gain another 25,000 residents by 2030, warranting the expansion.
