The teenage grandson of Mississippi Civil Rights leader James Meredith is facing a murder charge for the death of 17-year-old Saleh Ghasan Humaid .

James Howard Meredith Knight, 16, is one of two teenagers accused in the Sept. 19 shooting death of Humaid that took place in the area of Sunnyvale Drive and Sandalwood Place.

Interim Hinds County Coroner Jeramiah Howard said Humaid of Canton died from multiple gunshot wounds. According to court records, Humaid was discovered unresponsive behind the wheel of a grey Toyota Tacoma truck.

Knight's attorney Merrida Coxwell confirmed to the Clarion Ledger that Knight is the grandson of James Meredith. In 1962, Meredith became the first Black student to enroll at the University of Mississippi.
