JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KFVS) - Hundreds of thousands of Missourians may soon lose their food stamps, and a Missouri lawmaker says there’s not much the state can do to help.

Missouri is one of several states now warning that food stamp funding may not come through for November. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program--or SNAP--is a completely federally funded program. It likely won’t be funded until the federal government shutdown ends.

This is not somewhere the state government usually steps in, as Ranking Member of the Budget Committee Rep. Betsy Fogle explained.

“There’s nowhere in the state budget to pull that money from, in the existing budget,” Fogle said. “In order for us to backfill those dollars ($1.5 billion), the governor would have to call us back for a special session.”
