Chennai: The Chennai Meteorological Department has escalated its weather warnings, issuing a Red Alert for five districts—Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, and Puducherry—for today, October 22, 2025, forecasting very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. This critical alert comes as the Northeast Monsoon, which commenced four days earlier than usual on October 16, has intensified dramatically across Tamil Nadu.

The severe weather is driven by a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to strengthen further. The situation is already critical, with Cuddalore recording a staggering 17.4 cm of rainfall in a 21-hour period, while the Periya Kalapattu area in Puducherry reported an alarming 25 cm, leading to significant flooding and infrastructure strain.
